Fantasy football waiver wire heats up as bettors eye NFL Week 7 props

Week 7 of the NFL season has arrived, and fantasy football managers are scrambling to bolster their rosters ahead of a bye week-heavy slate. All four AFC East and NFC East teams are on a week off, creating a wave of demand at premium positions like wide receiver and quarterback. Injuries to high-profile starters have depleted available talent at running back and tight end, too, with the result that this might be the year's busiest waiver-wire period so far.
Week 7 is a pivotal point in the fantasy season for several reasons. It's the final bye week for a majority of the league, meaning that the vast majority of owners will have to make at least one, if not multiple, key roster moves to stay competitive. In addition, injuries have ravaged several top teams, leaving gaping holes that need to be filled.
The Week 7 bye teams — Buffalo, Jacksonville, the Chargers and Washington — share a particular challenge for fantasy owners: three key receivers in Stefon Diggs, Calvin Ridley, and Mike Evans are all on the sidelines for fantasy's busiest waiver-wire week of the season so far. With injuries piling on top of that, the result is a rush of demand at wide receiver, in particular, that fantasy managers will have to sort through.
Among the most widely recommended targets on the waiver wire this week is wide receiver Germie Bernard, who leads the NFL with 18.3 fantasy points per game. The rookie has the most targets in the league among undrafted rookies at 50, according to data from Pro Football Focus.
Lightning is striking twice when it comes to roster needs in Week 7, as wide receiver Omar Cooper Jr. has emerged as another key waiver-wire name. The second-year player is seeing a boost in targets and usage compared to his rookie year, with 24 targets over the past three games compared to 25 total targets last season.
For fantasy managers in a pinch for quarterback, C.J. Stroud is the consensus top waiver-wire target this week. The Texans projected starter should see 20+ attempts per game going forward as he manages a difficult early stretch but has the chops to produce across the board, including in rushing. According to PFF data, the 22.7 projection for Stroud is significantly higher than the 17.7 for Patrick Mahomes and ranks 11th in the league, putting him behind only Rodgers, Tannehill, Hurts, Winston, Lawrence, and Watson.
Jaren Hall looked solid starting for the Vikings last weekend, though that just opened up waiver-wire opportunities for serious fantasy impact players like Kyler Murray, a name sitting outside of league awareness who is suddenly in a better position to produce with A.J. Green, Marquise Brown, and Nelson Agholor out.

The running back position is seeing interesting rotations thanks to injuries and depth-chart changes. Zach Charbonnet has taken on a bigger role with Rashaad Penny out and should remain undroppable in deeper fantasy leagues. Fellow rookie Jordan Mason has cemented his role in the 49ers' passing game and will be the next man up in that backfield if the current depth chart cools off.
At tight end, Chargers' Brevin Jordan and Titans rookie Chig Okonkwo are both seeing increased snaps in recent weeks and stand to profit from more targets with Mike Evans and Joshua Kelley out. In one optimizer model, both tight ends appeared as top waiver targets, ahead of veteran players like Dalton Schultz and Mark Andrews.
In Yahoo leagues, the top ten waiver-wire priorities this week should all start with Jaylin Noel, the standout rookie from Clemson who has been this season's fantasy breakout star. Followed by should be the other emerging talent TJ Hockenson, mid-week additions Antonio Williams, Ja'Kobi Lane, and Omar Cooper Jr.
Fantasy analysts provide consensus rankings, and the jury is still out on Garrett Wilson: of the leagues tracked, only 11 percent had Wilson on their team, meaning he's likely still available. Wilson is also the top deep-threat target in the league, seeing consistent downfield opportunities.
That dynamic aligns fantasy and betting narratives, as the leading week-long prop for oddsmakers isn't a top weekly fantasy name, but an under-the-radar player. That's Tre Tucker, Waiver Wire Player of the Week, who is averaging 7.1 targets per game in Cleveland's offense. Tucker has 70 fantasy points in his last three games, the largest surge of any player in the league. Sportsbooks have responded by adjusting his props, with the Over now at 80% likelihood compared to 75% earlier this week.
