NBA Restricts Certain Bets Through Sportsbook Partners Ahead of 2026-27 Season

Fantasy Managers Notably Affected, Focus on Player Stats Intensifies
The NBA notified its sportsbook partners of new betting restrictions on Oct. 16 2026, targeting specific markets the league identified as most vulnerable to manipulation following last season's high-profile betting scandal. The rule changes, communicated to designated "authorized operators", focus on limiting access to certain prop bet types as the 2026-27 NBA regular season gets underway.
The restrictions, which the NBA and its betting partners say are aimed at maintaining the integrity of the sport, are likely to impact fantasy managers and other bettors who follow player-level performance data closely.
Sportsbooks associated with the NBA will no longer allow "under" bets on players projected to be on the court for fewer than 12 minutes per game. This change targets bench warmers typically reserved for garbage minutes at the end of lopsided affairs.
The league also moved to ban betting markets on which player records the first points, rebounds, assists, steals, or blocks in a game. These "first play" in-game prop markets have become increasingly popular for bettors following timelines of key action in recent years.
Additionally, the NBA prohibits sportsbooks from structuring parlay bets around low-likelihood, high-payout "under" wagers. These combinations allow bettors to pool multiple single-game propositions, with potentially massive payouts for going all-in on longshot outcomes.
Finally, the NBA has outlawed placing wagers on the opening tip, restricting prescient bets on a marginal difference of potentially crucial posession.
These restrictions, obtained by Sports Business Journal, come after the NBA and its sportsbook partners immunized against wagering on single-player, single-event markets in October 2026.
A report recently published by Sportradar looking back at the 2024 playoffs showed live-betting volume rising 47% year-over-year. Over 40% of live wagers were placed in the first two quarters. That the highest activity was tracked in the opening act jibes with the new NBA rule.

The NBA, which sportsbook operators say account for 99% of the U.S. betting market, has justified the tightening with the high-profile cases of Malik Beasley and Ed Davis attempting to rig their own player props.
The NBA currently works with legal analytics firm IC360 to monitor potential irregularities. The league also develops in-house AI tools that study individual bets against irregular activity patterns that may suggest a player's props are compromised.
The new restrictions mark a concerted campaign to crack down on single-game, single-player market prophecies, as player props have become a crucial cornerstone of the legal sports-betting model and its margins.
The NBA has leveraged leaderboards, badges and prizes to turn players into celebrity spokesman for its favored sportsbooks.
The league has counted on a thirst for celebrity public figures to connect indoctrination to the mainstream, resisting pressures to recuse itself from being partial to the partners whose presence it funds through format provisions.
The new rules go into effect for the beginning of the 2026-27 regular season, though no timetable was provided for a proposed end to restrictions.
Sportsbooks have already for years been driving player props as an incentive to attract and retain customers.
DraftKings and FanDuel did not respond to a request for comment.
